Mississippi's Gulf Coast features more of America's Best
By Claudio Demarchi

When William Mason set out to build a golf course along the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, he had a couple of simple requests of his partner. "One of my deals was that it had to be completely open to the public," says Mason. "And no homes will ever be out here … it is pure golf."

Pure golf, indeed! No residents shooing you off their lawn when you're chasing an errant ball. There's nothing like the sound of nothing, well except for that wonderful echo of club striking ball … and the occasional F bomb that follows it. The course motto is "Golf … The Way Nature Intended." It's a majestic golf course that's bound to become even more majestic.

Designed by former U.S. Open champion Jerry Pate, the course encompasses 245 pristine acres, surrounded by 1,800 acres of dedicated nature preserve. The native surroundings of pitcher plant bogs, cypress swamps, long leaf pine savannah, live oak groves and native grass prairies have been integrated into the design of this par-71 layout.

Featuring five sets of tees, the course allows you to tee it up from as much as 6,774 yards from the blacks (with a course rating of 72.8 and slope rating of 136) or move it up as close as 5,493 yards (slope of 118) from the greens. You may find a comfort zone in the blues from 6,435 yards or whites from 6,260 yards. Don't get too giddy over the tee blocks. The course definitely plays longer than it looks. You'll have all you can handle here!

The front nine is tree lined, while the back 9 is a prairie savannah. The greens are smooth and quick, averaging 9-9 ½ on the stimp meter.
"We tried to make the course good for accomplished golfers, plus someone who plays maybe one or two times a year," says Mason, who partnered with Palace Casino Resort owner Robert Lowe. "You can definitely score well if you're hitting it straight.

The Preserve obviously made an impression on the raters from Golf Digest, and I will tell you that after having played the course a couple of times – it was absolutely no surprise. Golf Digest's annual survey of "America's Best New Courses ranks The Preserve #6 in its annual poll conducted by a panel of more than 800 golfers. As a matter of fact along with The Preserve, Fallen Oak Golf Club also on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and the Dogwoods Course at Hugh White State Park in Grenada MS we also recognized.

As for the designer, well … let's just say Mason is a fan of his work. "I'd use Jerry again in a heartbeat," says Mason. "He's an unsung hero in golf design. Jerry likes to put at least one or two holes in that are drivable on a par-4. Here it's 11, 12 and 17 if you've got a bit of a wind."
"No. 17 has water. It's risk-reward. If you slice to the right, you're double bogey at best."

The Preserve was just about set to open a few years back, just as Katrina hit the Coast.
"We had 11 or 12 holes sodded when the hurricane hit," he says. "We lost 1,500 trees. We got a little damaged … we were without power for about three months we were low on the list or priorities. But because of the excellent drainage that we have we didn't lose any of our sod. We were set back eight months to a year.

"That is long behind us now." We're doing well. The golf on the Mississippi Gulf Coast has never been better. The Coast is not 100% of what it was, but things are coming back bigger and better. The word out, golfers and just the general are coming back."

The Preserve is 15 minutes from Biloxi, 40 minutes from Mobile, Ala., and 90 minutes from New Orleans, LA. It is located two miles north of Interstate 10, off Hwy 57, in Vancleave.

The Preserve having an affiliation with the "Four Diamond" The Palace Casino Resort is a huge bonus. In addition to the Preserve, there are 16 other courses that you can play on the while staying at the Palace. Overlooking Biloxi Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, the Palace Casino Resort is home to some of the hottest gaming on the coast. Whether you're looking for penny slots or something with much higher stakes, the resort's got it covered. There is scrumptious food, from traditional southern buffet to fine dining at Mignon's (steak and seafood).

Stay and play packages available from as low as $59 per night based on double occupancy depending on the time of year that you plan to visit. Call 1-800-725-2239 for more info. Or check out The Preserve's website at www.preservegc.com.
