Airfares from $99.00 one way

By Claudio DeMarchi

What awaits you of course are high stakes tables, slick greens and of course the blues. Easy access to Mississippi golf is back and it has never been so inexpensive with the recent announcements by Westjet of direct flights from Toronto to New Orleans and Air Canada to Memphis Tennessee. Both cities border the Mississippi State line, New Orleans approximately 1 hour from the Biloxi/Gulfport area on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and the Tunica area in the Delta region of Mississippi is less than 45 minutes from the Memphis airport.

If your plans were to include the Mississippi Gulf Coast for a minimum 3 nights and 3 rounds of golf you are in for a real treat. In fact you might say that they will treat you to dinner…well not really but through the efforts of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Golf Association you would be eligible to receive absolutely FREE a $100.00 Visa Award Card that is redeemable at one of the many seafood restaurants on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. For more details on how to receive your card visit www.golfcoast.com

No doubt that everyone has heard of the Gulf oil spill and although the visible effects of the spill on shore in Mississippi were minimal at best it has had a very serious affect on the residents, in particular those involved in the Fishing Industry. Everything is pretty much back to normal these days and this is just one small way in which we golfers can all help out.

Sunglasses and sunscreen will be your first order of business before you relax with your first cocktail as you ponder your upcoming round. Golfers have been visiting the Gulf Coast since the early 1900's and over the past 15 years or so some of the greatest designers in golf; they include Fazio, Pate, Nicklaus, Palmer, and Davis Love III. A couple of our favorite Stay & Play options on the coast are www.gulfcoastresortrentals.com for those looking for condo style accommodations or the IP Casino Resort www.ipbiloxi.com

What else awaits you are 26 miles of scenic shoreline that includes 26 miles of manicured white sand beach with water activities to suit any fancy. Land lovers can certainly take advantage of the Canadian dollar's strength be it at the mall or in a refreshment stand of choice sipping on a $2 happy hour pint. Spas, casinos, museums and historical sites are all yours for the taking and when you have built up that hunger there are restaurants a plenty to satisfy any pallet. www.gulfcoast.org

Tunica Mississippi awaits you at the north end of the State. Approximately 45 minutes south of the Memphis airport, its nine casino's have turned this popular area into the Casino Capital of the South.

With the casino industry came growth and a change to the landscape that included substantial growth immediately south of Memphis in the regions of Southaven and Olive Branch. To put it into perspective think of what Mississauga means to Toronto. All the modern conveniences, hotels, restaurants, shopping, and of course golf! www.sodesoto.com

But back in the delta things move at a much slower pace! The Mississippi Delta is a true slice of Americana and there is a reason why people from all over the world come to visit. The cotton fields are still in evidence and the sounds of famous blues musicians past and present resonate in the juke joints throughout the Delta. A visit to the Delta would not be complete without a stop at Clarksdale, about 1 hour directly south of Tunica. You will come to the Crossroads, the meeting point of highways 49 & 61 where the legendary Robert Thompson sold his soul to the devil. This point can be considered the gateway to the city and you won't find a better meal of pulled pork than right on that corner at Abe's. Better plan to stay in Clarksdale for at least one night because your visit would not be complete without an evening in Morgan Freeman's Blues Club – Ground Zero. I can pretty much guarantee you that no one should be driving anywhere!

Tunica with its 3 championship courses all within 10 minutes of each other along with another 4 or so within 40 minutes in the Southaven and Olive Branch areas make this the premier golf region in the north part of Mississippi. The nine casinos in the Tunica area provide none stop entertainment either self induced or by attending a concert or event by any number of world class performers that grace the stages of the area casinos. Restaurants! More than you could ever want but some that just can't be duplicated. Another must stop in the Delta is the Hollywood Café. In the heart of the casino area this former farm commissary turned restaurant was made famous by Marc Cohen when mentioned in his song "Walking In Memphis." Great burgers, steaks and catfish but don't leave without trying the fried dill pickles.
