Just another reason to stop in Wild and Wonderful - West Virginia

If you ever needed just one more reason to stop in West Virginia this summer, this is it. The resort's Lakeview Course which in 2007 hosted the West Virginia Open has been awarded a prestigious four-star rating by Golf Digest and has also been rated among the Top 100 courses in America.

This facility comes with all the creature comforts including a world class spa and two golf courses that fall under our "wow" category. There are 187 comfortable guestrooms and 52 two-bedroom condominiums to choose from. Originally founded in 1950, much of the resort's history revolves around the legendary Lakeview course, where you'll walk in the footsteps of Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus – all played here and loved what they saw.

The narrow tree-lined fairways of the Lakeview course make it extremely challenging if you are not hitting your driver straight. I would consider the 7th hole with its 180 foot drop overlooking Cheat Lake the course's signature hole and definitely treat to play. Don't let the vertical drop fool you, it is tougher and longer than you think – keep it in the middle.

On this visit we had the opportunity to play Lakeview's newer course, the Mountainview Course. At 6447 yards your first impression is that it would be a piece of cake compared to the Lakeview Course. Don't be fooled by the numbers. Mountainview offers up greater variety in the style of holes with a good mixture of tree lined fairways but many holes offering up more generous landing areas. Just for good measure they had thrown in a few risk reward holes that almost make you thread the needle with your driver.

Estate homes line this course but are tucked back far enough that the backyards do not come into play. This maybe the greatest assortment of custom-built homes anywhere - each with beautiful vistas of the surrounding Allegheny Mountains and spectacular Cheat Lake.

After three months of exhibiting at golf shows, being around golf and golf resorts all we wanted to do was to get far enough south until we found green grass. It was early April and our tee time was around 8:30 and the temperature was only in the mid 40's when we teed off. We were anticipating mid 60's by mid day. Nonetheless all the staff were ready to go and by the looks of the parking lot we were not the only ones anxious to chase the little white pill.

On the front nine you may get away with spraying your ball but definitely not on the back. Some of the more memorable holes include my favourite, #9, a par 5 with a blind tee shot that will end up being short of the crest of a hill, it is downhill from there and a long accurate second shot could have you on the green. Don't be long.

Number 10, you accuracy off the tee is much more important that length. Long hitters leave your driver in the bag here.

Hole #13 is another great hole that overlooks Lake Cheat. You must have an accurate tee shot since the ideal landing area is only 25 yards wide. Don't be right – aim left and let your ball feed back to the fairway. This dog-leg left forces you to use driver to clear the corner in able to see the uphill green.

Hole #15 is another tester, a big dog-leg right where you have to hit your tee shot a minimum of 200 yards to clear the corner but still be in the narrow landing area with out of bounds on both side and a small narrow green.

The natural terrain of the course allows it to drain extremely well making it playable even in the wetter months of early spring and late fall. This is great place to get an early start to or extending your playing season. Considering that it was early April the course was in mid-season form.

No problem quenching your thirst or appetite at Lakeview. Fusion offers up a hearty American cuisine, but most of us golfers will enjoy the sporty atmosphere and staff at the Legends Sports Bar.
