In 12th century Scotland shepherds would knock stones into rabbits’ holes to pass the time. They would do it in the area now known as Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews. The activity was to become what is nowadays known as “golf”.

Transitioning from “goulf” to “gouf”, “gowf” or “kolf”, the sport denoted by this name came to be the favorite game of the elite and the wealthy.

By the year 2000, golf became a 62-billion-dollar industry. Since then, one of the most miraculous happenings of the decade -the growth of Dubai- has helped the sport to develop even more. Reaching its 10th century of life, golf is now played in extreme luxury.

Dubai is a Paradise for both golfers and sideliners. The harmonious yet dynamic (most of the time) intricate design and architecture of Dubai’s hotels, restaurants, golf courses and beaches turn each visitor into an enthusiast, no matter the purpose of their trip.

If the reason is business and golf, that’s even better. The stretched miles of golf courses offer endless playing opportunities: having the chance to choose between designer courses with gardens, fowl and palm trees, one can simply pull out his club and enjoy a heavenly game. Literally.

One such heavenly example is The Montgomerie golf course. Brought to Dubai by the Scottish professional player Colin Montgomerie, the golf club is a mixture of traditional and extravagant design.

Montgomerie grew up playing golf at Royal Troon, Prestwick, Muirfield, Carnoustie, Turnberry and St. Andrews in Scotland and it was here where he developed his golfing skills and got the basic principles of designing a golf course. Montgomerie’s first collaboration with designer Desmond Muirhead resulted in a stunning site for golf lovers who also have a taste for eccentricity. The club is simply named The Montgomerie and it is a success that reminds players of the golfer’s twenty-year career.

With fourteen man-made lakes and eighty-one bunkers unfolding on more than 200 acres, the course is a par 72 championship course that also offers a 360-degree teeing ground. This gives the player the chance to try a different hole each time he tees off. One hole is shaped in the form of the United Arab Emirates.

The reversed history of the sport is once again sensed: links land style fairways that the Old Course at St. Andrews is famous for make their appearance in Dubai as well, adding European touches to the Dubaian extravagance. The fusion of cultures that turns the course and its fairways into such a challenging game add a little bit of adventure rarely found due to the flat landing area.

A different type of fairway is the Snake hole named after the “eye-shaped” bunkering behind the green, which is the world’s largest. It comes as no surprise that it can be found in Dubai. Rolling mounds, long holes, shorter holes, majestic views, a black pearl tee, a hand-shaped bunker and green surrounded by water come together in an Arabian painting, making the game much more challenging at the same time.

A few miles away from Dubai International Airport, another outstanding course, Al Badia, spreads its offerings: 18 holes, 11 lakes and waterfalls feeding into the creek, and a 7250 suit-club.

Designed in 2003 by golf architect Robert Trent Jones II, Al Badia is part of Festival City and lies on the banks of the oldest seaports in the world, the Dubai Creek. The most beguiling thing about this resort is its swirling architecture; roofs and terraces on different elevations that blend into spiraling structures give a postmodern look to a “land of Bedouins” (translation for Al Badia).

If you’ve won the game you can celebrate at Nineteen, the award-winning restaurant within the Montgomerie Club or at one of Al Badia’s lounges. Twenty-one boutique guest rooms await you at the Montgomerie, should you choose to spend several days and indulge yourself in this Emirates Hills Residential Estate location. Luxury will be part of your game.

Dubai is home to several more high-quality courses. Stay tuned here to discover them as the Traveling Golfer continues to bring you more information on Dubai in future articles.
