I must admit, I have not played or heard of too many Raymond Floyd golf courses except the renovations he did to the famed “Blue Monster” and the Gold Course at Doral. However, this is another fine example of the quality of courses that you can play in and around Flint area at unbelievable prices.
Personally, I like the front nine better than the back (only because I shot better on the front). This course offers a good mixture of tree-lined tight holes along with open, but equally challenging, links-style holes.
There are plenty of doglegs, so being a big driver does have many advantages on this course (trust me!). Fortunately, all the power carts are equipped with a GPS system so that you make a better decision on what to hit off the tee.
The 1st hole is a relatively easy hole to start with (the way I like it). There is ample room on your drive, but make sure you stay out of the trees on the left and the water running all the way down the right side. The 2nd hole will test your accuracy, since distance off the tee is not a factor to this short par 4 but positioning for your second shot is crucial.
The 7th is a relatively short par 5, but play this one as a three-shot hole, since the reward does not justify the risk to this well-protected green.
The 8th might be considered a signature hole on any other course. But here it’s only a 220-yard (from the blues) tee shot, entirely over wetlands. Yuck! (But I parred it.) Fortunately, if you are playing the whites, it’s only 165 yards and from a much different angle. Great hole!
On the back nine, there are three short par 4s (11th, 13th and 14th) that are drivable, if you are John Daly. But for most of the rest of the world, hit an iron off the tee and get yourself in good position for your second shot.
I would have to say that the 17th and 18th would be considered their signature holes. The 17th is a picturesque tee shot and the 18th is a long par 5 that will test your finishing skills.
