WOMEN ARE FROM
VENUS AND MEN
ARE FROM MARS...
OR ARE THEY?
by GOLF-SOUTH STAFF
If you are a golfer – male
or female – the first
prerequisite is a destination
that offers you a variety of
top-ranking courses that
challenge not only your
skills and abilities but your
senses as well. You want
ideal weather conditions
that will let you spend as
much of your vacation time
as you want hitting the links
and doing things you want
the round or …rounds are
finished. It’s off the course
where the differences may
be more noticeable,
influencing where a group
of male versus a group of
female golfers may chose to ‘stay and play.’
Vacationing male groups we have discovered, after ‘exhaustive’ research, like to play golf…eat…play golf…drink…nap….eat…drink…visit the men’s club…go to bed…then get up and start the process all over again the morning.
Women on the other hand might add a couple of other activities to the list, shopping being one of them according to the folks we interviewed. For many women a prerequisite for a golf destination might
be outlet malls enroute, where they can
score ‘one or two’ great bargains or a
quaint downtown area where they can
browse for antiques or that unique
pottery piece. Men on the other hand will
usually settle for a shirt or golf ball from
their favourite course unless they forgot
to pack some necessity – like socks or
underwear – in which case the closest
discount store will typically do!
Golf armies – whether male or female –
don’t travel on empty stomachs so
having choices when eating out is also a
priority in picking the right destination
for the group. For the guys, wings, beer
and more wings is often the preferred
lunch making places like Hooter’s, a
must and a ‘sports bar / gentlemen’s
club’ that also serves perfectly done Jack Daniels steaks and $2 tumblers of beer or a unique brand of dinner/theatre at n ‘all-you-can-eat buffet’ may also serve as an ideal dinner spot.
When it comes to food, women tend to be a bit less predictable and a little more adventurous. Today’s lunch quest might
be the perfect Margarita and fresh
shrimps served on the deck overlooking
the 18th
or a glass of crisp, cold Pinot
Grigio and
a ‘too-die-for’ balsamic chicken
salad
near the beach. Ladies on vacation
typically chose ‘dinner out’ over
‘dinner in’ and a little night clubbing with
a lot of dancing is definitely the preferred
way get in shape for the next day’s round!
When it comes to accommodation so long
as there is a clean room, a comfortable
bed and TV (preferably a big screen one)
men are generally happy. Women
occasionally opt for something more a bit more luxurious – a quaint country inn or a first class resort with a spa but both men and women agree that if their respective groups enjoy getting together at the end of the day to swap stories, collectively make a meal or grill some burgers, then kick back and relax – a condo can’t be beat.
Checking out historical golf sites and legendary players seems to appeal to everyone, regardless of gender. Take for example, Pinehurst (click HERE for Pinehurst story) where the late Payne Stewart enjoyed his finest professional hour when he won the 1999 US Open in dramatic style with a late charge that culminated in a gut wrenching victory – just weeks before he was tragically killed. Men and women alike pose for photos next to the bronze statue of Stewart frozen in time in his one legged victory dance – sharing the dream with him. We also noticed that visitors of both sexes were hard-pressed to leave the gift shop without at least one or two treasures in hand. Ladies, the only thing you can’t ‘officially’ do is visit the men’s room at the Pine Crest Inn where Stewart scrawled his signature on the bathroom wall.
When you stop to think about it…’Women Aren’t from Venus’ and ‘Men Aren’t from Mars’! If you choose a destination, whether you are a group of men, a group of women or even a group of couples that lets you indulge your passion in the sport and celebrate your sometimes different tastes and interests in life – everyone can have an enjoyable and exciting golf vacation.
