It was less than 24 hours that we had been in Portugal; Lisbon is in fact where we flew into when we hooked up with the striking Sofia Hibon (affectionately known now as "The Golfers Wine Lady.")

Since we were not going to have a great deal of time in Lisbon, Sofia had graciously offered to spend part of a day with us and give us a tour of some of the "must see" spots. One was the charming hillside town of Sintra, the summer homes of the kings of Portugal. Laden with charm and history, a stroll through Sintra will take you back to the 15th Century. The centerpiece of the town that you will want to visit is the Palacio de Pena. Making our way back to Lisbon we toured one of the most beautiful coastlines on the Atlantic with a quick stop in Estoril, a cosmopolitan seaside hangout for the glamour crowd.

We were so ever grateful to Sofia for her time, and knew that we would be meeting with her again before we reached the premier Vila Sol property in the Algarve. Something that made us even more grateful was when she advised us that she had brought for us a sampling of each of the Golfers' Wine products, plus a bottle of their 10 year-old Port. Our project was to report back to her on our tastings of the various Golfers' Wines. Well, there was no way that we were going to let Sofia down. We tasted them all, right down to the last drop.

Golfers' Wine is produced in one of the first demarcated wine regions in the world. It has been since 1758 that the region best known for its production of Port, that the area has been producing some of the best wines in the world. Located 100 km east of the city of Porto, the Douro Region extends 120 kms from west to east in the direction of the Spanish border and covers a total surface of 250.000 hectares. Bordering the Douro River and possessing ideal afternoon sun exposure, the Quinta dos Aciprestes slopes have been replanted with the most highly recommended Douro varieties.

The vineyards' boasts an ideal location, between the sub-regions of Cima Corgo and Douro Superior. The area's rich soil, combined with a sedimentary rock rich in phosphorous, allows the roots of the vine to penetrate deep into the subsoil to reach water and nutrients. The climate changes from cold and rainy winters to long summers with desert climate. Perfect, it seems, for ripening red fruit characteristics of grapes that result in excellent wines.

Here is what we can tell you about them:

GOLFERS' WINE RESERVE, DOURO D.O.C., Red, 2005:
Douro Reserve 2005 is produced from old vines of the Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca varieties. The first thing you notice is a beautiful ruby color with the oak ageing bringing out intense aromas of plum and cherry.

The ripe fruit flavor explodes on the palate; a long finish indicates the excellent structure and perfect balance of the wine. This wine is an ideal accompaniment to strong flavored meat and game dishes and strong cheeses.

GOLFERS' WINE RED, DOURO D.O.C., Red, 2005:
As you pour your first glass, and I bet you can't have just one, you will notice a very dark red with violet tints. An aroma of berries, green tobacco and vanilla will hit your nostrils signaling the excellent quality to this wine.

A full-bodied mixture of round tannins and subtle oak integrate well with the berry flavors. A long finish completes the pleasure of tasting a most impressive wine. Grilled or barbecued steak is a classic match for this full red. Roasted red meat in elaborately prepared sauces would go very well with this wine.

THE GOLFERS' WINE WHITE, DOURO D.O.C., 2008:
This Golfers' Wine, made up of a blend Malvazia Fina, Donzelinho, Gouveio and Moscatel grapes has a beautiful straw color. It is very complex with intense floral and white fruit aromas.

On the palate this medium bodied wine is presented with a good balancing acidity and flavors of peaches and melon. This is a perfect accompaniment to white meats, chicken and pork. Excellent with fish, and the most elegant accompaniment would be lobster.

THE GOLFERS' WINE ROSE- Quinta do Cidrô, 2007:
Golfers' Wine Rose is produced in the sub-region Quinta do Cidro. This area is close to that of the reds, but this region - with a higher altitude and micro-climate influenced by the Atlantic Ocean close by - ranges from hot and very dry summers to cold harsh winters. This provides ideal conditions for preserving the fresh aromas and acidity of the noble indigenous red varieties. When these varieties are made into Rose by drawing off the grape before normal red fermentation, the resulting wine is complex and fruity, light in acidity and long and velvety in the finish.

This Rose has a deep reddish pink colour. Aromas of fresh strawberry and raspberry fill the glass. The palate is smooth and refreshing and finishes long and full of pleasing berry-like flavours.

10 YEAR-OLD TAWNY PORT:
This Port is produced by skilful blending of wines that are matured for a minimum of 10 years in the timeless setting of Port wine. Possesses a slightly lighter colour. Long and persistent to the nose, creamy and minty, this is an excellent example of the smooth velvety wine that is 10-years at its best.
