The 5th hole at Vila Sol

by Claudio DeMarchi

We arrived at the five-star Vila Sol Resort on Portugal's Algarve region shortly after it had been rebranded as a Renaissance Golf & Spa Resort. It was already dark when we arrived, and after not having played golf for a few months, we were really looking forward to getting out on a course that had hosted the Portuguese Open on more than one occasion. I'll admit that when we arrived, looking out from the reception area through the dark, I just knew the course was just beyond the darkened trees. Similarly, from the balcony, but now with a glass of Golfers' Wine in hand, my suspicion of the golf course location had been confirmed.

Golfers' Wine, by the way, is a product of Grupo Atlantica; the organization that owns the Vila Sol properties. While settling on the balcony, our group was enjoying the full-bodied Douro. This wine is a smooth rich red, that although not what they would consider their premium line, certainly could be by most standards. At about $18.00 per bottle (in Canada) it is a bargain worth searching out. Someone such as me, who isn't really into the arts per se, the theme of Art and Nature at the Vila Sol properties can be a little lost at first. I found that after I'd spent an entire day at the resort – most of it on the golf course – it was only as I was retracing my steps and that I passed the wall-sized mural I hadn't noticed when I'd first checked in.

"Oh, that's nice," I thought. The wall-sized mural in the hotel lobby was created by famous Portuguese artist Jose de Guimaraes and represents the "Portuguese Sea" that through history provided food to local villages and was a link to other colonies.

The "Art & Nature" concept is also evident on the golf course itself, where you will find yourself admiring rather interesting and large local art pieces that blend into many of the well-manicured tee boxes. Such a unique notion!

Knowing this golf course had twice-hosted the Portuguese Open, I had a pretty good indication of the top quality golf that I was in for. Well-known European architect Donald Steel used all that Mother Nature provided him as he carved out three distinct 9-hole loops appropriately named Prime, Challenge and Prestige, all offering up their own unique challenges!

Maintenance of the golf course is second to none. Pride of ownership is shown on the course and throughout the complex. After playing so many of the courses in the Carolina's, one does not expect to play Oceanside courses with much in the way of elevation changes. Although the Vila Sol courses are only a couple of long drives from the ocean, you will find that there a number of holes that provide significant elevation changes with the most dramatic being on the par 5, 6th hole on the Prime Course. I'd have to say this was my favorite hole!

Looking to improve your game? Look no further! The Vila Sol Golf Academy can customize a program to suit your needs. The Academy, located just 300 meters from the Clubhouse, is equipped with swing analyzer video, Explanar Golf Training system, four putting and chipping greens, two bunkers, and - of course - a driving range. Lessons are available in several languages.

Algarve's Vila Sol Resort is a family friendly place, too. If you have your children with you and find you need some time to yourself, take advantage of the Kids Club and Babysitting services that are available at the resort.

While enjoying Portugal's Algarve Region, make sure that you take the time to get onto some of the Oceanico Courses, situated just minutes from Vila Sol and adjacent to the Town of Vilamoura. There you will find courses designed by European PGA Stars such as Christy O'Connor and Nick Faldo. The "Can't Miss Course" of this group – and the latest home of the Portuguese Open - Oceanico -Victoria was designed by none other than the king of golf - Arnold Palmer.

After a tough day on the course, or even after lugging several shopping bags around the shopping district, you may find a Spa treatment or two may be in order. Our friend Amanda can vouch that the massages are exceptional! Our group was scheduled to tee off in the afternoon, and Amanda arranged for a massage prior to the round. Regardless of the fact that she had trouble making contact with the ball for the first four holes, it did not matter; you just couldn't get the grin off of her face. To this day, when we mention the Spa at Vila Sol she gets goose bumps. Next time at Vila Sol I might just book myself in for a spa too!

Vila Sol offers so much; I've barely scratched the surface.

Shopping is plentiful both within the complex – offering over 30 shops and boutiques - and in the neighboring town of Vilamoura, located just minutes away.

And of course how could you not think of dining when you think of Portugal? A variety of restaurants on the property offer a number of international specialties with a focus on fresh fish and seafood. You can't forget that you are in Olive country, either. How this for an appetizer: Three different olive oils, fresh homemade bread, with carrots of the Algarve seasoned with garlic and coriander. Delicious!

Vila Sol is located 20 km from the Faro International Airport in the heart of the Algarve region, five minutes from Vilamoura and minutes from the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean.

Portugal's south Coast offers golfers the opportunity to play year round.
