By the time you have the opportunity to read this, your Traveling Golfer will have just come off the world renowned Valdarama Golf Club that played host to the Ryder Cup near Marbella Spain in 1997. Just prior to that, we traveled to the Algarve region of Portugal where we had been checking out some of the finest golf that the region has to offer, plus researching some of the outstanding wines and ports that Portugal is famous for. Of course, we are doing this all for you.

Many months ago, before we launched the "Nine & Wine" feature on the Traveling Golfer, several thousand of our readers responded so positively to adding the wine component to the site that it has added a lot more work (and pleasure) to an already active environment. But we don't mind!!

The International Golf Tour Operators Conference (Nov 17th – 21st) is taking place on the south coast of Spain in Marbella and the Traveling Golfer will be there.

Here are few things that we have lined up for our visit overseas, and over the next few months you will have the opportunity to learn a little from our experiences – some of which you just may want to experience yourself.

Our first taste of Europe will begin in the historic city of Lisbon, Portugal where we will become acclimatized with the culture and visit a few must-see sights including the quaint little town of Sintra, with its steep and narrow cobblestone roads and lanes that lead to the Palacio da Penna.

After our tour of Lisbon, we will be moving up the coast for a couple of days to a resort called Praia del Rey near Osbidos; a city within the confines of a castle. The ocean side course at Praia del Rey, we have been told, is similar in style to both The Ocean Course at Kiawah and Harbourtown. How inviting!

After leaving Praia del Rey, we will be putting ourselves in the hands of the fine folks at the Vila Sola properties. Oh, did we mention that they just so happen to be the proprietors of "Golfers Wine"? Sofia Hibon, the resident wine expert, will be escorting us to the site of Vila Sol Evora which is scheduled to open in July 2009. This unique setting will be home to a world class golf course, winery and spa. Rumour has it that spa treatments will include wine baths.

The final few days in Portugal will be at Vila Sol Algarve where we will have the opportunity to play the 27-hole complex that is home to the Villa Sol Challenge, an International Amateur Golf tournament.

Our last evening in Portugal should be a memorable one as Sofia has promised to introduce us to the entire line-up of the Golfers Wines and Port with the assistance of sommelier, Luis. Luis' personal passion is port, and we are thinking this evening will be a real treat.

After our whirlwind tour of Portugal, The Traveling Golfer will then be heading off to the Costa del Sol region in the south of Spain. Here we will be participating in the International Golf Tour Operators Conference where we will be making contacts with other destinations which will hopefully establish even more future research projects. This Traveling Golfer is expecting to add at least 10 pounds to this stealthy body by the time I return, but its research I'm willing to do to for you.
